Supermarket Helps Boost Scottish Economy

11/09/2009

A recent announcement from Sainsbury’s details plans to open new stores throughout Scotland creating 1,300 jobs by 2010.

Two new stores will be located at Strathaven and Prestwick together with extending current stores in Darnley, Hamilton and Leven to include Sainsbury’s own TU clothing and home ware brand.

Sainsbury’s MD for Scotland said “At a time when many companies are being forced to cut back on jobs, Sainsbury's can look forward to welcoming nearly 1,300 new colleagues and increasing its presence right across Scotland."

Earlier this year Sainsbury’s acquired six Somerfield stores across Scotland (Newton Stewart, Glasgow Muirend, Stewarton, Denny, Kinross and Selkirk Local) which will generate an additional 300 jobs. The expansion is part of their aim to increase shop floor space 15% by March 2011. Sainsbury’s currently has 38 stores in Scotland and plans include the expansion of its Braehead store to 70,000 sq ft making it their largest Scotland store.
